What is Pilates?
Pilates is a whole-body exercise program designed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It helps to build strength in all parts of the body equally, promotes better posture, improves balance and increases your flexibility. The Pilates method focuses on optimal alignment, body awareness and control.
The most common type of class is a mat class, where equipment is minimal and portable. There are also Studio classes which use large pilates equipment (reformers, cadillacs, wunda chairs) to perform variations of the same exercises as are included in mat repertoire.
Everyone can benefit from Pilates - it's not just for dancers and elite athletes! Pilates aims to increase your functional movement - making those day-to-day tasks easier to perform. By conditioning the body as a whole the individual is made stronger and more resistant to injury.
Whatever the motivation, be it injury rehabilitation, to support another sport, ante- or post-natal exercise, for relaxation, Pilates is perfect for everyone. Every exercise can be modified to suit each individual, helping to put you in control as each session can be as gentle or as challenging as you wish to make it!
